Shillong's Bethany Hospital

The monsoon had begun, Cherapunjee was again the wettest place on earth, flooding was heavy all over NE India. And yet, the lack of safe drinking water remained.

While the rains replenish the water in the reservoirs, while it fills the cisterns outfitted for rain harvesting, while it causes the rivers to bulge out of their banks and the many waterfalls to become breathtakingly beautiful, it also washes germs, pollutants, chemicals, animal and human waste into the water supply. In NE India the beginning of the monsoon season not only fills the area with water but also the area hospitals with folks who have become sick from drinking the water.

When we return in September we will be working with our friends at Bethany Hospital to make sure that all those who come to Bethany with water borne illnesses will find safe water to drink. Bethany has a history of working to ensure the best quality care for their patients including upgrading their water treatment as upgrades become available. We are honored to be helping them to take the next step.

Solving the monsoon effect on the ground water will take time and the efforts of an entire community. It will, thankfully,  be wonderful to know that until then Bethany Hospital will be prepared to meet those effects with safe water and skilled health care!
