Today Costa Rica seems mostly for tourism but in its history is a wonderful tradition. When visiting someone's home the visitor pauses at the threshold of the house and says, "May I come into your home?" Once invited in the visitor responds, "I am here to serve you."
The host then turns the tables on the visitor and expresses his honor and responsibility to sacrifice even the last of his food in order to make the guest feel comfortable. This culture is steeped in hospitality.
These days the hospitality of serving people has become an industry in and of itself. Mission and service organizations who quietly struggled to assist others 15 years ago now host booths at conferences with the glitz and glamour of a carnival arcade.
Humility and service are taught as close partners. There's the story of Jesus with a towel about his waist, on his knees, holding the disciples feet basted in the stench of the street. The disciples looked on confused as the act of servanthood was redefined in their midst.
Its very difficult to prepare for the price of being a servant but still there's the temptation to ask, "What's it pay?"
The season of Lent is upon us. Some 40 days from now the body of Christ will be torn and exhausted from dragging the weight of a cross. It got real dark that day. Then Jesus said, "I Thirst!"
At EDGE OUTREACH we live, pray and work in a community of faith. Water, Vision, Mercy.
Perhaps we are learning humility, working on dark days, giving foot baths and saying phrases like, "May we come into your home? We are here to serve you."

The hospital install is the largest purification system EDGE has done. The make up of the team was unusual as well. There were 5 students from Murray State University, a famous/infamous blogger from Texas, a business man from Oregon, and ...Read More here.
