Since 2001 EDGE OUTREACH has been working to further develop a collaborative enterprise with our partners in Romania. A scholarship program has been in place since 2004. Visits have included seminars and community visitation and health support. However, what began as a vision clinic during a trip in February 2005 has developed into a new venture and a deeper relationship with the Romanian people.
The 'vision' trip brought together twelve participants who conducted basic vision tests and in 5 days'fit' 1278 pairs of glasses donated by the Lions Club. It was an incredible opportunity to touch the lives of the socially outcast; gypsies, orphans and even youth living with AIDS. During the clinics the team had imagined young people, orphans and gypsies who could make and dispense eyeglasses on their own to have work to keep them from living in the streets. In the Bucharest airport on the way home, the team met a North American man who, while collecting medical equipment through the Rotary Club, had been donated an optical lab. Upon hearing of their mission and new ideas, he donated the lab to EDGE OUTREACH.
